Open Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Open MRI)

With Magnetic Resonance Imaging there is no exposure to radiation. The equipment uses a very strong magnetic field and specific radio frequencies to produce images. Hydrogen atoms within the body are very susceptible to these factors, and this allows us to produce images on the atomic level. Using the computer, the data is collected, combined, and manipulated using complex mathematical equations. The detailed anatomical images are significant diagnostic tools and are especially critical in assessing soft tissues such as disks or nerves.

Visalia Imaging features the Hitachi .7 Tesla vertical field open magnet. The quality of these images is excellent, which is due in part to the continued quality control maintenance accomplished on a yearly basis. Confinement to an imaging tube is not necessary. In this open MRI unit there is ample room for the patient which is a significant relief to those patients with claustrophobia. Patients with internal ferromagnetic (metallic iron) devices, such as a pacemaker, cannot be scanned; and a CT scan is used instead.

Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA)

MRA allows for the visualization of blood vessels in specific areas of the body, i.e. brain, without the need for contrast material or the carotid artery where contrast is needed. From the patient's perspective while on the table during the exam, there is no difference from an MRI. All technologists are certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and licensed by the State of California. It is their goal to provide professional, yet compassionate, care to all patients.

The Open MRI has a 16 inches of space from table to top & is open on the sides. It is a little closer to your face however you can turn your head to the side for most exams. (If doing the head or neck area you cannot look out and you will have a coil near your face). Weight limit is 450 lbs

The Closed 3T MRI is 28 inches wide and 18 inches from table to top. Even though this is a closed tube, it is a Wide Bore and the top is a few more inches away from your face than on the Open MRI.  Weight limit is 500 lbs
